best known for being the place where clayton "peg leg" bates was discovered in 1926, the liberty was the first movie and vaudeville theatre for black entertainers. The venue was a space for large meetings, traveling shows, and amateur nights, seating as many as 800. special shows were given for white audiences, as a few other theatres did for black patrons. not much is known about the liberty theatre, which is often confused with the "liberty theatre" at nearby camp sevier.
