The Sheltons have been performing gospel music as a family since 1958. George Shelton Sr. played guitar and enlisted his six children as a harmony vocal group.

After they won a talent show sponsored by bluegrass legend Arthur Smith, they were offered an opportunity to perform on his Charlotte, N.C. television show. This led to performances on the WYYF Greenville show Bob Poole’s Gospel Favorites and a contract with the Greenville-based Halo Records. The Sheltons recorded for Halo and Mark V Records from the late 1960’s into 70’s. They have remained active as a family group ever since, even through the death of George Shelton Sr. in 1997.
